The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will begin core drilling operations on Interstate 70 to prepare for the Improve I-70 Project.
Beginning Monday, core drilling operations will begin in both directions of I-70 between U.S. Route 54 and U.S. Route 63.
Intermittent single lane closures between 7 p.m.-6 a.m. will occur Monday through Friday for approximately six weeks, a MoDOT release states.
Core drilling will begin in the westbound lanes, then move to the eastbound lanes.
This process is part of the design process prior to the Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project begins. The project is the first in MoDOT's statewide Improve I-70 program.
Core drilling "allows for a detailed examination of the layers of roadway and supporting geology below the roadway surface."
The process will allow designers to decide on design and material elements for the project.
Construction on I-70 between Columbia and Kingdom City is scheduled to begin this summer, with an anticipated completion date of late 2027.
