MSD superintendent charged with DWI

The superintendent of the Missouri School for the Deaf was arrested March 14 on charges of driving while intoxicated in Boone County, according to authorities.

In addition to a DWI charge, Ernest Garrett, 35, Fulton, was charged with careless and imprudent driving.

The Ashland Police Department received a call at 3:29 a.m. of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 63 near Gans Creek.

Officers reported they saw his car at Loy Martin Road and stopped him at Gilmore Lane. The officer's report said that Garrett appeared intoxicated and told officers that he was traveling home from the Columbia Regional Airport.

Police said Garrett agreed to submit a breathalyzer test and was then arrested. He was transported to the Boone County Jail, according to the department's arrest records. He was held on a $1,000 bond, which he made within a half-hour.

Representatives from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education were not available for comment, and school representatives were directed to transfer inquiries to DESE.
