Lady Blue Jays take over first place in SLIAC

MT. PLEASANT, Iowa - The red-hot Westminster College Lady Blue Jays extended their winning streak to eight games and took over sole possession of first place in the SLIAC with Saturday's 62-49 win over the Iowa Wesleyan University Lady Tigers.

Westminster (14-4, 10-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter and held a 30-25 edge at halftime. The Lady Blue Jays outscored Iowa Wesleyan 17-10 in the third quarter to maintain a 47-40 advantage and split the season series.

Junior forward Krista Armontrout produced a game-high 22 points to pace three players in double figures for Westminster, which shot 45 percent (22-of-49) as a team. Junior guard Payton Gruber and senior guard Kasey Gatson provided 11 points apiece.

Armontrout collected a game-high eight rebounds in helping the Lady Blue Jays to a 31-30 edge on the boards.

Darby Massner finished with a team-high 13 points for the Lady Tigers (14-5, 9-3), who slipped back into second place in the conference. Aimee Iverson came up with 11 points as Iowa Wesleyan shot just 31 percent (16-of-51) from the field.

Westminster hosts Fontbonne University in a SLIAC game at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Blue Jays lost to Fontbonne 73-67 on Jan. 2 in St. Louis.
