Surging Lady Blue Jays move into share of SLIAC lead

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Westminster College Lady Blue Jays moved into a share of first place in the SLIAC and stretched their winning streak to seven games with Wednesday night's fourth-quarter rally past the Greenville College Lady Panthers 63-55.

Westminster College (13-4, 9-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) pulled even with Iowa Wesleyan University (14-4, 9-2) atop the conference standings after the Lady Tigers fell at Fontbonne University 66-58 on Wednesday night.

The Lady Blue Jays - who entered Wednesday night's game tied with Greenville for second place - erased a 49-42 deficit by outscoring the Lady Panthers 21-6 in the fourth quarter, including 16-0 over the final 5 minutes, 34 seconds. Junior forward Krista Armontrout's jumper with 2:54 remaining put the Lady Blue Jays in front to stay at 56-55.

Armontrout - who was 9-of-16 from the field - responded with a game-high 23 points to pace Westminster, which completed the season sweep of Greenville. Senior guards Mackenzie Haddox and Kasey Gatson supplied 13 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Blue Jays shot 41 percent (24-of-58) as a team.

Gatson also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as Westminster was outrebounded 30-24.

Laura Goodnight came off the bench to lead the Lady Panthers (12-6, 8-3) with 15 points. Missy Deal added 12 points as Greenville shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field.

Sole possession of the SLIAC lead will be on the line when the Lady Blue Jays play at Iowa Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday. Westminster will be looking to avenge a 70-67 overtime loss to the Lady Tigers on Dec. 12 in Fulton.
