Prep Baseball: Montgomery County 6, North Callaway 4

MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. — The Thunderbirds dropped to 6-10 on the season and 3-4 in the Eastern Missouri Conference after Thursday night’s loss to the Wildcats.

Montgomery County (5-7, 2-2) got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but North Callaway answered with a run in the fifth. The Wildcats put up three runs in their half of the inning to build a 5-1 lead, while the Thunderbirds scrambled back with three runs in the sixth to close within a run.

Montgomery County then tallied a run in the bottom of the inning to clinch the victory.

Senior first baseman Quintin Nichols was 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and was hit by a pitch twice as North Callaway finished with seven hits. Sophomore shortstop Coy Danison also finished 1-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored, while junior catcher Wyatt Branson went 2-for-4.

“We have to adjust quicker at the plate,” Thunderbirds head coach Kevin O’Neal said.

Sophomore starter Sam Althiser (2-2) was pinned with the loss for North Callaway, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Althiser struck out four, walked three and hit four batters.

North Callaway travels to Mexico for a non-conference matchup with the Bulldogs at 5 p.m. today.
