Vice provost to speak at MU alumni banquet

Dr. Jim Spain, vice provost for undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri, will be the featured speaker at the 20th annual anniversary banquet of the Callaway County Chapter of the Mizzou Alumni Association.

The banquet will be April 28 at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club, 2600 Meadow Lake Drive NW, in New Bloomfield. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

An MU faculty member since 1990, Spain was a professor of animal science before taking on his current role in 2011. He has received a multitude of awards, including MU's prestigious Kemper Teaching Fellowship in 2001 and the Excellence in Advising Award at Mizzou in 2000. In 2002, Spain was presented the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in Higher Education and in 2007 he earned the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In addition to Spain's speech, four awards will be given. This year's Outstanding Alumnus Award will be presented to Marty Martin-Forman, chief operating officer of Fulton State Hospital.

Other recipients are: Fred and Nathan Atkinson, owners of Atkinson Farm Service, the Agriculture Award; Beth Houf, principal of Fulton Middle School, the Education Award; and Dr. Jim Stevermer, professor of clinical family and community medicine and medical director of Callaway Physicians, the Faculty Award.

Alumni and friends of the university, as well as friends of the honorees, are invited to attend. An election of officers will be held, and the Mexico Brass Quintet will give a special performance of "Old Missouri."

In addition, the chapter will present a $1,000 Capstone scholarship, renewable for four years, to Fionna Clark, a senior at North Callaway High School. A local alumni scholarship of $1,000 will be given to Taylor Wiseman, another North Callaway High School senior. A silent auction will be held to raise money for future scholarships.

The deadline for reservations is April 21. Cost for the dinner is $20 for MAA members and $25 for non-members. Checks should be made payable to Mizzou Alumni Association-Callaway County and mailed to Mike Boulware, P.O. Box 10, Fulton, MO 65251.

The Callaway County Alumni Chapter is one of only a few chapters nationally to achieve Capstone status - the highest level of achievement in the Mizzou Alumni Association's Chapter Recognition Program - every year since the award was established. This distinction allows the chapter to earn scholarships for local students, as well as funds for chapter activities.
