City street repairs happening at start of October

Fulton residents should expect delays on two miles of city streets beginning the week of Oct. 5 for the city's 2015 Asphalt Overlay Project.

City engineer Steve Gohring said he wants to give Fulton citizens advance notice of construction delays and street closures on 16 streets until paving is completed Oct. 15.

"We kinda give them a heads up because a lot of times they're surprised when they show up and they complain that they weren't given notice, so we try to get it into the paper," Gohring said. "We hang door hangers on doors and car windows so the public is aware they may have to move their cars for a brief

period of time while we do this construction."

The city engineer, street department superintendent and staff recommend streets needing repair and prioritize them for resurfacing based on their condition. Gohring said that streets usually prioritized for the yearly project have been damaged by utility installation, sewer repair or have become run down because of inclement weather.

"We prioritize them on need for being resurfaced," Gohring said. "We compile a pretty good- sized list and send that over to administration and the city administrator and the mayor review it and they review it with the council members also. Then it comes back to engineering on what they felt after looking

at how we prioritized them, whether they're in poor shape, in need of repair immediately and so forth."

Council members view the engineering and street department's recommendations to determine which ones are considered a priority for resurfacing. The engineering department gathers a cost estimate based on the set amount allotted in its yearly asphalt overlay budget, including the number of streets that fall within the budget, then it opens the project for bidding.

"The streets that are fixed this year are removed from the current list and the streets that are skipped this year usually rise to the top of the priority list (next year)," Gohring said.

The following streets included in the overlay priority list include:

•Airway Drive from Route F southwest to city limits;

•Apache Drive from Perry Lane to Bradley Lane;

•Arrow Street from Cote Sans Dessein Road to cul-de-sac

•Churchill Drive from West Chestnut Street to Business Highway 54;

•Ewing Avenue from 12th Street to 15th Street;

•Industrial Drive from West- minster Avenue to North Bluff Street;

•Jefferson Street from 10th Street to dead end;

• Monroe Street from 14th Street to dead end;

•Old Jefferson City Road from Signpainter Road to Cote Sans Dessein Road;

•Paschall Drive from Westminster Avenue to McBride Field Parking Lot;

•Perry Lane from Lane Street to Apache Drive;

•Thatcher Street from Seventh Street to end;

•Walnut Street from Seventh Street to Eighth Street;

•Eighth Avenue from Walnut Street to Jefferson Street;

•Ninth Street from Court Street to Jefferson Street; and

A public notice from the City of Fulton advises residents to not avoid parking on these streets until all paving is completes. It also reminds people to remain vigilant for workers, to obey traffic control signs and flagmen while driving around construction areas.
