Lady Wildcats softball team rallies past Eugene

NEW BLOOMFIELD - The New Bloomfield Lady Wildcats softball team wiped out a 7-0 deficit in rallying for last Thursday night's 9-7 Show-Me Conference triumph over the Eugene Lady Eagles.

Eugene plated two runs in the top of the first inning and broke through for five in the third to build its big lead. New Bloomfield (9-2, 3-1 SMC) chipped away with two runs in its half of the third, then tied the game at 7-all by tallying five in the fifth.

The Lady Wildcats then went in front to stay when they put up two runs in the sixth.

"The girls really showed a lot of heart by fighting back from that deficit," New Bloomfield head coach Dara Reinkemeyer said.

Junior third baseman Kate Baxter sparked the Lady Wildcats' 14-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with a home run, triple, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Junior Madison Love - who started on the mound for New Bloomfield - was also 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Sophomore shortstop Madi Craighead and freshman center fielder Haley Berhorst were both 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Lady Wildcats. Junior left fielder Baylee Garrett also finished 3-for-4 and scored once.

Freshman Kaylee Beck, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Love, logged the win for New Bloomfield. Beck scattered three hits, struck out three and walked none.

The Lady Wildcats played Friday and Saturday in the AA Bash Tournament in Eugene and Russellville. Results were not available at press time.

New Bloomfield travels to Sturgeon for a non-conference game at 5 p.m. today.
