Sherman lifts Blue Jays soccer team to OT victory

Junior midfielder Eli Sherman's unassisted goal in the 98th minute sent the Westminster College Blue Jays soccer team to its fourth straight win, a 3-2 overtime victory over the Central (Iowa) College Dutch on Wednesday night at Fulton High School.

Sherman also scored in the 12th minute - off an assist from junior midfielder Tripp Sheehan - to give Westminster (4-1) the early lead, but Central College (3-4) countered with goals in the 69th and 85th minutes to take a 2-1 edge. The Blue Jays forced overtime just 12 seconds after the Dutch's latter score on junior forward Drew Cook's goal, assisted again by Sheehan.

Sherman then followed up by delivering the decisive goal in the extra period.

Westminster owned a 17-10 advantage in overall shots, including 10-8 in shots on goal, as well as 3-2 in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Raul Belman logged six saves to pick up the win for the Blue Jays. Belman was named St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the week Monday.

Westminster plays Simpson (Iowa) College at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Columbia College. The Blue Jays then host Augustana (Ill.) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Fulton High School.
