Scanlan lifts Lady Owls soccer team to first win

FAYETTE - Freshman defender Shelby Scanlan's timing couldn't have been better for her first collegiate score.

Scanlan delivered the match's only goal with 11 minutes to play, sending the William Woods University Lady Owls soccer team to its first victory of the season with Wednesday night's 1-0 non-conference shutout of the Central Methodist University Lady Eagles.

William Woods University raised its season record to 1-2-1, while Central Methodist University slipped to 2-3.

"It was a great team win against another high-quality, non-conference opponent," Lady Owls head coach Randy Hall said. "I'm very happy for Shelby in scoring her first collegiate goal and hope it is the first of many to come."

William Woods senior goalkeeper Ashley Parisi tallied seven saves to record her first shutout of the season.

The Lady Owls begin American Midwest Conference play at Park University at noon Saturday.

"We couldn't have asked for a better dress rehearsal to open conference play ...," Hall said. "CMU was physical, athletic and hard-working, and really put our group to the test."
