Illinois College hands Lady Blue Jays soccer team first loss

JACKSONVILLE - The Westminster College Lady Blue Jays soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Illinois College 2-0 on Sunday night despite a dominating advantage in overall shots (22-4) and shots on goal (8-4).

Ashley Sholmire scored in the 50th minute and Bianca Savarese in the 66th for Illinois College (2-1).

Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey made two saves in taking the loss for Westminster College (2-1).

The Lady Blue Jays were coming off a 9-0 romp over Lakeland College (1-1) on Saturday in Jacksonville. Already up 4-0, Westminster broke away behind five second-half goals.

Freshman midfielder Courtney Whitlock and sophomore midfielder Morgan Henry scored two goals apiece for the Lady Blue Jays, who outshot Lakeland 26-16 and 16-9 in shots on goal. Westminster also had a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior forward Tayisah Pohtos, senior midfielder Eileen Koppy, freshman midfielder Gracie Koonce and sophomore forward Payton Beeler also delivered goals for the Lady Blue Jays. Junior forward Adrienne Ebersole - a Fulton graduate - tallied Westminster's final goal in the 84th minute.

Woolsey had one save in being credited with the win.

The Lady Blue Jays square off against the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) in their home opener at 5 p.m. Friday at Fulton High School.
