Lady Wildcats softball team clips California

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Junior starter Madison Love threw a two-hitter and struck out eight as the New Bloomfield Lady Wildcats softball team ended the regular season by pounding the California Lady Pintos 12-2 in five innings Monday night.

New Bloomfield (16-7) put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. California scored both of its runs in the fifth.

Love went the distance for the win, surrendering two runs - one earned - and issuing a walk. Love helped herself by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in as the Lady Wildcats accumulated 15 hits.

Freshman center fielder Haley Berhorst was 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times for New Bloomfield, while junior third baseman Kate Baxter finished 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Senior first baseman Stephanie Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Lady Wildcats triumphed in the junior varsity game 6-2.

New Bloomfield is the No. 4 seed for the Class 2, District 10 Tournament at Linn and will tangle with No. 5 Belle in the first round at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
