Fulton council hears of proposed city taxicab service

Fulton residents will soon have another method of transportation, as a new taxicab service was approved at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Kimberlie Johnson, the owner of K & M Transport, submitted the application for her business license for the taxicab service in October. Johnson expressed the need for a taxicab service in Fulton, saying her one-cab company would benefit the community.

"I see a lot of need," Johnson told the council during the public hearing part of the meeting. "I've heard from several friends and local community members that do wish that there was a taxi cab service."

Johnson has prior experience as a driver for Audrain handicapped services. She currently transports clients for lab work, appointments with doctors and other activities.

"I've been stranded on my way to work - I work nights - and it's very scary," Johnson said. "And not having a cab available after midnight or somebody's sleeping - a family member - and you can't get ahold of anybody. It'd be nice to know that there's someone out there to come get you other than a tow truck, which is very uncomfortable.

She added during the public hearing that he anticipates seeing the company grow in time.

A motion was made to amend the "new business" section of the agenda to consider the business license. The council approved the application.

At the beginning of the regular council meeting, Fulton Mayor LeRoy Benton addressed the "appointments" section of the agenda, which is typically discussed near the conclusion of the meeting, to accept City Prosecuting Attorney Casey Clevenger's resignation.

Clevenger has been with the city since April 2011 and is resigning to accept a new position with the 13th Judicial Circuit as the new drug court commissioner.

"She's done an outstanding job and we know you don't do it for the money," Benton told Clevenger. "You do it for service to the community, and we appreciate that."

Clevenger thanked Fulton Police Chief Steve Myers for all his support and hard work over the years.

"I'm sure that Mr. Sterner's gonna do a fantastic job," Clevenger said. "The transition will be seamless I expect."

Robert Sterner will fill the vacancy for the remainder of the elected term until the April 2017 general election.

Her resignation will be effective Nov. 29, and she will assume the position on Nov. 30.
