Twelve Callaway basketball players earn media honors

In terms of Callaway County basketball, it was a dandy dozen.

Twelve Callaway players - six apiece on the boys' and girls' sides - were selected to the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters' all-Central District basketball teams announced Wednesday.

Named to the Class 4 boys' team from Fulton were senior guard Ricky Dawson and senior forward Austin Wilson. The Lady Hornets' junior guard Sloane Totta and junior forward NaShayla Brandt were picked on the Class 4 girls' squad.

South Callaway senior guard Troy Hentges was a first-team choice on the Class 3 boys' team, while a pair of teammates - senior guard Cory Hanger and senior forward Jacob Smith - were second-team selections. Freshman guard Adrian Mann was a second-team pick for the Lady Bulldogs on the Class 3 girls' squad.

Meanwhile, North Callaway senior guard Elaine Brinker was chosen to the Class 3 girls' first team.

New Bloomfield senior forward Ashley Kelley picked up first-team honors on the Class 2 girls' squad and freshman guard Madi Craighead was a second-team selection. Junior guard Grant Nichols was a second-team pick for the Wildcats on the Class 2 boys' team.

Dawson - a second-team all-North Central Missouri Conference choice - surpassed 1,000 career points this past season, tallying 14.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as the Hornets finished with a 17-10 record. Wilson was also a second-team all-NCMC selection, averaging 14.1 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Totta - a first-team all-NCMC pick - also eclipsed 1,000 career points, averaging 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals to help direct the Lady Hornets to a 16-11 mark. Brandt joined Totta on the all-NCMC first team, averaging 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Hentges was named the Show-Me Conference most valuable player as the Bulldogs compiled a 23-3 record after falling to Father Tolton for the Class 3, District 8 title. He averaged 19.0 points and 4.8 rebounds.

A second-team all-SMC choice, Hanger averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds. Smith also made the all-SMC second team, averaging 9.3 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Mann - receiving all-SMC second-team status - averaged 14.2 points, 6.5 steals and 5.6 assists as the Lady Bulldogs ended the season with a 13-10 record.

Brinker, a first-team all-Eastern Missouri Conference pick who also went over 1,000 career points this season, averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 assists and 5.4 steals to guide the Ladybirds to an 18-8 finish.

Kelley - named to the all-SMC first team - averaged 11.3 points and 4.9 rebounds as the Lady Wildcats finished with a 22-6 record following their loss to Tipton for the Class 2, District 8 championship. Craighead, a second-team selection, averaged 12.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

A second-team all-SMC choice, Nichols averaged 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists to help pace the Wildcats to a 14-11 record.

•South Callaway senior guard Dax Helsel, second-team all-SMC boys; senior forward Terry Miles, honorable mention; sophomore forward Konnor Arrowood, second-team girls.

•New Bloomfield senior forward Taylor Howard, honorable-mention all-SMC girls; freshman forward Jak Kitchens, honorable-mention boys.

•North Callaway freshman guard Kyla Bertschinger, first-team all-EMO girls; junior forward Erinn Bush, second team; senior guard Brandon Hagedorn, second-team boys.
