Lady Owls split doubleheader after Southeastern rallies in nightcap

A blistering two-out rally prevented the William Woods University Lady Owls from wrapping up their spring-break trip with a doubleheader sweep.

The Southeastern (Florida) University Fire plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in stealing a 7-6 win over William Woods in Wednesday's nightcap.

The Lady Owls (14-13) blanked Southeastern 2-0 in the opener.

William Woods freshman pitcher Allison Waskow was armed with a 6-2 advantage to begin the bottom of the seventh in the second game. After giving up back-to-back singles to the Fire's Kaleigh Floyd and Susan Hinks, Waskow got Bri Girardin and Annie Weaver to both fly out to bring Southeastern down to its final out.

Brittany Lacasse drew a walk to load the bases, then scored along with Floyd and Hinks on Cat Maldonado's bases-clearing double to draw the Fire within 6-5.

Emily Bryant pinch-ran for Maldonado, scoring on Anna Martin's walk-off, two-run homer to left.

Waskow logged 1 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits. She issued a walk and struck out none.

Freshman Bre Logan started for the Lady Owls, yielding two earned runs on three hits, striking out three and walking three.

William Woods tallied three runs in the fifth to grab a 4-2 lead. The Lady Owls pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh to wrap up their scoring.

Senior third baseman Caroline Sicht went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored to pace the Lady Owls' eight-hit attack.

Sophomore pinch-hitter Beth Begemann went 1-for-1 with an RBI double, while junior shortstop Shelby LeCuru was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

Junior designated player Emily Murphy finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run as William Woods saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

Waskow threw a six-hit shutout to propel the Lady Owls to the win in the opener. She struck out five and walked five.

Begemann's two-out single in the bottom of the fourth drove in Sicht for the decisive run. Murphy added to the lead the next inning with a two-out, RBI single to score sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell.

Murphy finished 2-for-3 with a double as William Woods racked up seven hits.

Begemann went 1-for-1, while Campbell, LeCuru, senior second baseman Sam Parsons and senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst were all 1-for-3.
