Westminster sweeps Principia to open its SLIAC schedule

The Lady Blue Jays' offense led the way to a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of the Lady Panthers on Wednesday.

Westminster (3-6, 2-0 SLIAC) won 10-3 in the backhalf and rolled to a 10-2 five-inning triumph in the opener.

The Lady Blue Jays trailed 1-0 after five innings of the second game, but responded with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore center fielder Bree Peterson tied the game with an RBI single and sophomore shortstop Brittany Hodge scored on a passed ball to put Westminster ahead 2-1.

Sophomore second baseman Kelsi Hill's sacrifice fly drove in Peterson, while sophomore catcher Alyssa Johnson's RBI double drove in freshman pitcher Amber Tepen for the frame's final run.

Principia (3-8, 0-2 SLIAC) got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Blue Jays tacked on three more to extend their cushion to 8-2.

Westminster scored twice in the top of the seventh and the Lady Panthers topped their scoring off with one in the bottom of the seventh.

Tepen, Hodge and Johnson all finished 2-for-3, while Hill went 2-for-4 as Westminster pounded out 13 hits.

Tepen threw four innings to get the win. She yielded two earned runs on six hits, walked a batter and struck out two.

The Lady Blue Jays used a six-run top of the third inning to cruise to victory in Wednesday's first game. Westminster topped off their offense with four runs in the fifth inning to help sophomore Alyson Hahn pick up the complete-game win.

Hahn struck out seven, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, while walking three batters.

Tepen - playing left field - went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a double. Freshman designated player Kim Morrison was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while freshman first baseman Abby Bartley - a South Callaway graduate - was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Peterson was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Hill was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double as part of the Lady Blue Jays' 12-hit attack.

Westminster hosts a doubleheader against Coe (Iowa) College on Saturday. Games begin at 1 and 3 p.m, respectively.
