Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center begins lifting lockdown

The institution went on lockdown Friday after an offender assaulted two correctional officers

The Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center began slowly lifting a lockdown Monday, according to a statement from Missouri Department of Corrections Communications Director David Owen. The institution went on lockdown Friday, March 14 after an offender assaulted two correctional officers.

Owen told the Fulton Sun in a statement that the two officers "sustained minor to moderate injuries" after an assault Friday evening. Both officers are now in good condition and the incident in under investigation. Every incident of violence is reviewed to ensure "all appropriate actions are taken," Owen said. Furthermore, he said the Department of Corrections makes safety and security of the public, its staff and offenders its highest priority.

For that reason, the institutional lockdown was initiated Friday in an effort to ensure the safety of offenders and department staff. Offender privileges are limited during a lockdown and offenders are typically restricted to their cells. Owen told the Fulton Sun in a statement that some privileges were restored Monday as the institution began lifting the lockdown.

"The institution is expected to be back to normal operations by the end of the week," Owen said in the statement.

Since the the incident is being investigated, Owen said the Department of Corrections could not comment further on the incident.
