No. 25 Owls topple Culver-Stockton in home opener

The No. 25 William Woods Owls opened their home schedule in style by continuing their recent surge.

The Owls registered their seventh straight win by disposing of the Culver-Stockton Wildcats 4-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Backer Sports Complex.

The Owls (11-3) trailed 2-0 after the Wildcats logged a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. William Woods tied the game in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by junior first baseman Jordan Dey and senior third baseman Austin Clapp.

Owls senior right fielder Nick Spagnola scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore designated hitter Konrad Kemper (South Callaway).

Senior shortstop Stephen Kohler finished William Woods' scoring later that inning by reaching on a fielder's choice that plated Clapp.

Junior Caleb Bounds pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the victory. Bounds struck out one, walked one and allowed just one hit.

Senior James Ball struck out two, walked one and gave up a hit to pick up the three-out save.

Clapp finished 3-for-4, Price was 1-for-3, while Dey went 1-for-4 for the Owls, which collected seven hits.

William Woods opens American Midwest Conference play with a doubleheader against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University on Thursday at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis.

Games will be played at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
