Callaway County Commission authorizes kitchen equipment purchase for county jail

The Callaway County Commission authorized the purchase of kitchen equipment for the county jail on Friday.

As the Fulton State Hospital undergoes changes to its facilities, it will no longer provide meals to the jail. The hospital had historically served the same meals to inmates and its patients alike.

The commission approved the purchase of a double convection oven at $5,500 from CARE Sales and Service and a walk-in cooler at $10,738 from Teel Mechanical.

Commissioners have not yet finalized a food service provider, but they've been in conversations with Signature Foods, a Millersburg-based food service provider. If selected, Signature will deliver individually packaged meals to the jail that will be cooled and stored in the walk-in cooler. Meals will then be heated in the double convection oven and served. This method requires less preparation and staffing than a more traditional kitchen setting.
