William Woods men clipped by Missouri Baptist to close regular season

The Owls were outgained 16-4 in overtime in bowing to Spartans 80-68 in Saturday's AMC regular-season finale.

William Woods (11-19, 8-14 American Midwest Conference) maintained a 64-61 edge with .18 seconds left before Missouri Baptist's Bryce Weibrecht nailed the tying 3-pointer with a pair of Owls in his face to force overtime.

The Spartans opened the extra session with a 10-0 spurt to put the the Owls out of reach and earn a season split with William Woods.

After trailing 29-28 at halftime, the Owls outscored Missouri Baptist 36-35 in the second half and led by as many as six points after intermission.

Junior forward DJ Johnson paced William Woods with team highs of 16 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Alec Mulvihill and senior forward Nate Bitner added 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the Owls shot 40 percent from the field (25-of-62).

Stephen Buckner II directed a trio of Spartans in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Adrian Kuyinu tallied with 17 points, while Weibrecht chipped in with 11 as Missouri Baptist finished 45 percent (31-of-69) from the floor.

Stanley Eboh grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to spark the Spartans to a 49-38 advantage on the boards.

William Woods dropped an 83-55 AMC road decision to the No. 13-ranked Columbia College Cougars last Thursday night.

The Owls - seeded eighth in the AMC Tournament - will host the No. 9 Hannibal-LaGrange Pirates in a first-round pairing at 7 tonight.

William Woods split the season series with the Pirates, edging them out 65-62 on Jan. 29 in Hannibal.
