No. 19 Lady Owls tumble to Lindenwood-Belleville

The No. 19 Lady Owls finished their run at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic with a 4-2 loss to the Lady Lynx on Sunday afternoon.

The loss - William Woods' fourth in a row - dropped them to 3-8 on the year.

Lindenwood belted a pair of home runs off of Lady Owls freshman starter Allison Waskow in a three run bottom of the first inning.

Waskow - who struck out five in the complete-game loss - was saddled with four earned runs on five hits, while walking a batter.

William Woods plated two in the fifth to draw to within a run, but the Lady Lynx added one more in the sixth.

Lady Owls sophomore designated hitter Beth Begemann was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Junior pinch-hitter Emily Murphy went 1-for-1 with an RBI as William Woods collected just five hits.

Begemann's two-run homer in the top of the seventh was the Lady Owls' only offense in their 4-2 loss to Campbellsville (Kentucky) University on Saturday.

William Woods freshman Bre Logan had trouble finding the plate, walking seven batters in a complete-game loss. Logan struck out three and gave up four earned runs.

The Lady Owls outhit Campbellsville 10-4.

William Woods, again, outhit its opposition in a losing cause as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Corban (Oregon) University in Saturday's early game.

Lady Owls senior starter Julie Scheer allowed a pair of earned runs in an inning of work to take the loss.

Scheer gave up a pair hits, walked two and struck out one. Waskow struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits in six innings of relief.

William Woods outhit Corgan 8-5.

The Lady Owls bowed to No. 11 Belhaven 3-1 in Friday's second game. Senior third baseman Caroline Sicht's solo homer in the bottom of the second produced William Woods' only tally.

Waskow struck out five in the complete-game defeat. She scattered six hits, walked one and yielded three earned runs.

The Lady Owls managed just three hits.

William Woods blanked Ave Maria (Florida) University 10-0 to start play on Friday. It was the school record 595th win all time for head coach Tracy Gastineau, surpassing the total of former Lady Owls coach and William Woods Hall of Famer Roger Ternes.

"You don't get into coaching thinking about wins, but every coach is a competitor and that's who we are," Gastineau said. "To put my name there though, it's a special thing for me, but it's over now and we can focus on the rest of the season."

William Woods racked up 12 hits, guided by senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst's 3-for-3, three-RBI showing.

Logan struck out three and walked three in pitching a four-hit shutout.

The Lady Owls open their home schedule with a doubleheader against Missouri Valley College on Thursday at the Backer Sports Complex.

Games will begin at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
