Officials look to increase Chamber participation

During the Fulton City Council work session July 14, the council discussed the reorganization of the Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Benton told the council that the chamber is looking for volunteers to serve on the new chamber committees. He told council members that their "participation in other committees would be vital."

He also said the the chamber is looking for an executive director.

FACC President Matt Gowin could not attend the council's work session meeting because of a prior commitment, but he agreed with the general ideas discussed about expanding a few chamber committees.

Gowin said the chamber will be open with council members and answer any questions or concerns they may have and welcomes them to have representatives participate on committees to help advance the project.

"I'd like to say we're increasing our focus on additional involvement," Gowin said. "We are looking to populate our committees, probably two fold - one, typically being shared by a chamber of commerce board member and the other board members will serve on those committees but we also want to reach out and include the municipalities, who are actually the ex officio members, and consider their input, just as we are on the full board."

He also said members of the general public are welcome to participate on committees, noting that a few have served on chamber committees in the past and were not board members. In particular, he mentioned the finance committee had representatives from financial and banking industries.

"We'll look for those people if they have a desire and have an expertise on some of our committee levels," Gowin said. "If they'd like to join us, we are certainly looking to populate the committees and we'll consider them."

Gowin also discussed the significance of considering the Fulton community's perspective.

"We want to be able to reflect the considerations of a lot of our community members and I think by involving them at the committee level, we can certainly reach out and obtain additional input," he said. "And maybe make a more concerted effort than we have made in the past."
