New Bloomfield to name baseball field after Haley

Rod Haley put New Bloomfield High School baseball on the map.

Now, the school is going to put his name on its field.

In a unanimous vote on the Thursday evening, the New Bloomfield R-III Board of Education elected to rename the Wildcats' home diamond Rodney "Rod" Haley Field.

Haley, New Bloomfield's legendary former coach, died in March at the age of 62.

"The naming of the baseball field after Coach Haley is something that is probably long overdue," New Bloomfield Board of Education vice president Shawn Cockrum said. "His record is tremendous, no other coach in the history of Missouri baseball comes close."

Haley's tenure in New Bloomfield included stints as a teacher and principal at the high school, but his legacy was cemented during his remarkable 15-year run in the Wildcat dugout.

At the helm, Haley molded New Bloomfield into one of the preeminent baseball programs in the state. He directed the Wildcats to six Class 1A state titles (1986, "89, "91-93, "96) and 10 final fours. New Bloomfield posted a third-place finish in 1985, tied for third in 1995 and placed fourth in 1988.

New Bloomfield holds a state-record seven state baseball championships.

Haley - who steered 14 Wildcat teams to district titles - was elected to the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998.

On the hardwood, Haley coached the New Bloomfield boys' basketball team to three Class 1A final fours, finishing second in 1992, third in 1991 and fourth in 1995.

New Bloomfield's Athletic Booster Club will officially name the field after Haley in a ceremony scheduled for the spring baseball season. A plaque featuring Haley's face and a list of his accomplishments will also be unveiled during the event.
