Late free throws push William Woods men to AMC triumph

The Owls went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 21 seconds of their 65-62 American Midwest Conference win over the Trojans on Thursday night.

William Woods University (8-13, 5-8 AMC) trailed 59-52 with 5:32 to go, but used a 9-0 run to pull ahead. Junior guard Austin Lowery's jumper with 1:25 remaining vaulted the Owls in front 61-59.

Hannibal-LaGrange University tied the game at 61-all on a layup by Daniel Piper with 1:01 to go. Freshman forward Darrien Dickey followed up by converting a pair of free throws with :21 left, putting William Woods in front to stay.

Lowery and junior forward DJ Johnson were both 1-of-2 from the line in the final :04, helping the Owls avenge a 65-63 loss to the Trojans on Dec. 4 in Fulton.

William Woods - which trailed 34-31 at halftime Thursday night - outscored Hannibal-LaGrange 34-28 in the second half.

Junior forward TaiRhe Turner notched team highs with 14 points and six rebounds for the Owls. William Woods shot 43 percent (23-of-54) from the field, while knocking down 16-of-20 free throws.

Tony Ardison tallied a game-high 15 points for the Trojans (5-14, 5-9). Piper scored 13 points, while Joe Reed added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Hannibal-LaGrange shot 48 percent (25-of-52) as a team and owned a 30-28 rebounding edge.

The Owls hosted AMC foe Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College on Saturday at Anderson Arena. Results were not available at press time.
