Westminster women top Principia for fourth win in a row

Junior guard Kasey Gatson's 16 points sparked the host Lady Blue Jays to a 61-50 SLIAC triumph over the Lady Panthers on Tuesday night.

Westminster College (10-5, 8-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) notched its fourth straight win and completed the season sweep of Principia (Illinois) College. The Lady Blue Jays were coming off a 94-77 home romp over Central Christian College on Monday night.

The Lady Blue Jays started fast Tuesday night, building a 37-19 halftime advantage. Westminster extended its lead to 25 points in the second half, despite getting outscored by the Lady Panthers 31-24 over the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore forward Andrea Zalis logged 11 points as the Lady Blue Jays shot 38 percent (24-of-64) from the field.

Gatson and junior forwards Danielle Smulczenski and Danielle Williams each had seven rebounds to lift Westminster to a 42-38 edge on the boards.

Forward Kara Johnson netted a game-high 26 points for Principia (7-8, 2-7 SLIAC). The Lady Panthers converted 33 percent (18-of-54) from the floor.

The Lady Blue Jays host a SLIAC matchup against Greenville (Illinois) College at 1 p.m. Saturday. Westminster will be looking to avenge a 50-40 loss to Greenville on Dec. 6 in Jacksonville, Illinois.
