Blue Jays' losing streak stretches to six

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The Westminster College Blue Jays dropped their sixth game in a row, falling to the Iowa Wesleyan College Tigers 72-60 in SLIAC action Wednesday night.

Westminster (2-12, 1-6 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) went in front 15-8 on senior guard Brandon Moore's 3-pointer with 14 minutes, 9 seconds left in the first half. Iowa Wesleyan, though, ended the half on a 10-3 run to take a 35-27 lead into the break.

The Blue Jays trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but pulled within 55-51 on senior guard Verdis Lee Jr.'s free throws with 6:12 remaining in the game. That would be as close as Westminster would get.

Lee - a Fulton graduate - delivered a game-high 18 points for the Blue Jays, who shot 40 percent (23-of-57) as a team. Lee and freshman guard Tanner Cochran shared the team lead with six rebounds apiece.

Junior forward Matt Murphy chipped in with 13 points for Westminster.

Chris Fowler supplied 15 points to spark Iowa Wesleyan (6-6, 3-5). Dion Lightner scored 13 points and collected a game-high seven rebounds, while Brock Butler tallied 10 points off the bench.

The Tigers shot 56 percent (30-of-54) from the field and outrebounded the Blue Jays 35-26.

Westminster returns home for a SLIAC matchup against Spalding (Kentucky) University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
