Brinker, North Callaway win South Callaway opener

Senior guard Elaine Brinker led all scorers with 22 points in the fourth-seeded Ladybird's 49-39 first-round triumph over the No. 5 Shamrocks at the South Callaway Tournament on Monday night at the middle school.

North Callaway (8-5) will play top-seeded and state-ranked Harrisburg in a semifinal contest at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the high school.

Harrisburg (11-3) - ranked No. 9 in the MBCA/MOsports.com Class 2 poll - opened tournament play with a 69-45 victory over No. 8 Russellville on Monday.

The Ladybirds - winners of their last four games - jumped out to a 29-14 lead at halftime. North Callaway head coach Matt Miller felt the lack of turnovers committed by his offense was a key in advancing to the next round.

"We took care of the basketball; anytime you're under 10 turnovers for the game, that's crucial," Miller said. "Defensively, especially in the first half, we played some suffocating defense."

Brinker tallied six steals and handed out a team-high eight assists. Junior guard Maddie Ausfahl scored six points, as did junior forward Bethany Bloss and freshman guard Kyla Bertschinger.

Junior guard Erinn Bush led North Callaway with seven rebounds.

Kayla Borcherding and Lauren Bergner paced the Shamrocks (3-7) with eight points each.
