North Callaway girls top Montgomery County, climb back over .500

The Ladybirds climbed back above the .500 mark with a 66-30 Eastern Missouri Conference romp over the Lady Wildcats on Thursday night.

North Callaway (6-5, 4-0 EMO) has won six of its last eight after starting the season 0-3.

"It feels good," Ladybirds head coach Matt Miller said. "... Coming out of Christmas break, we've been playing good basketball, I think. We're clicking on offense and defense, and getting above .500 is a big deal."

North Callaway sprinted out to a 24-11 lead in the first quarter, then switched into full-court pressure defense in the second quarter to widen its advantage. The strategy paid off as the Ladybirds owned a 42-17 advantage at the break.

"That really got us going and our offense going, and we got some buckets in transition," Miller said.

North Callaway senior guard Elaine Brinker logged game highs of 16 points and 10 assists, while picking up eight steals and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Kyla Bertschinger also supplied 12 points for the Ladybirds, while junior guard Erinn Bush scored 10. Junior guard Maddie Ausfahl and junior forward Bethany Bloss posted eight points apiece.

Sophomore forward Sam Schaefer came off the bench to notch seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Allie Schlueter led Montgomery County (2-7, 1-3) with nine points. Eleanor Arens finished with six points.

North Callaway (5-3) triumphed in the junior varsity game 44-27. Freshman forward Nicole Emmons logged a team-high 17 points and freshman guard Reina Schmauch chipped in with 13.

The Ladybirds host South Callaway in a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m. Saturday.
