William Woods women edged out in AMC play

Senior guard Destani Stensrud's attempts at a game-winning basket both rimmed out as the Lady Owls bowed to the Lady Lynx 73-72 in American Midwest Conference play on Saturday.

It's the third loss in a row for William Woods (8-4, 4-3 AMC).

Forward Jasmine Gibbs-Brown knocked down the first of two free throws to give Lindenwood-Belleville the edge. Gibbs-Brown couldn't convert the second shot, which the Lady Owls rebounded before calling timeout with .17 seconds left. Stensrud missed her first attempt at the go-head field goal, which was rebounded and put back up by junior guard Marissa Webb.

Webb's shot, too, missed, but it was corralled by Stensrud, who got one attempt off before time expired.

The Lady Lynx (5-7, 4-2 AMC) led 36-33 at halftime, but William Woods opened the second half with a 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the game with 17:47 remaining.

Junior forward Nia Lateju led the Lady Owls with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Blake French scored 16 points, while senior guard Dennisha Rice added 12 as William Woods was 39 percent (26-of-66) from the field and outrebounded Lindenwood-Belleville 43-31.

Guard Shelby Kohrmann paced the Lady Lynx with 20 points and Gibbs-Brown added 19. Guards Kindra Brown and Kirstie Owens each logged 10 points, sparking Lindenwood-Belleville to a 44 percent shooting effort (24-of-54).

The Lady Owls host AMC foe Harris-Stowe at 5:30 tonight.
