Third quarter downs Fulton girls in loss to Boonville

The Lady Hornets were outscored 15-5 in the third quarter of a 52-42 North Central Missouri Conference loss to the state-ranked Lady Pirates on Monday.

Fulton (6-2, 2-2 NCMC) had a similar third-quarter letdown in a 53-46 loss - its first of the season - to Boonville on Dec. 16 in Fulton.

The Lady Hornets notched a 16-13 lead through one quarter. Each team tallied 10 points in the second, resulting in a 26-23 halftime lead for Fulton.

Boonville - ranked No. 4 in the MBCA/MOsports.com Class 3 poll - registered a string of baskets to start the third quarter, which Lady Hornets head coach TJ Quick believes was enough to put her team into "panic mode."

"You don't have to win in the third quarter, but you have to score more than five points," Quick said. "...They beat us by 10 points in the third quarter and beat us by 10 points in the game, so the third quarter was the difference."

Fulton junior forward NaShayla Brandt scored a game-high 19 points and registered eight rebounds, while junior guard Sloane Totta finished with 13 points.

Paige Peterson sparked the Lady Pirates with 16 points and Morgan Edwards added 14.

Fulton (0-4) tumbled in the JV game 61-18. Alexis Weaver tallied seven points for the Lady Hornets, while Hannah Cerda added six.

Fulton hosts rival Mexico in an NCMC clash at 6 p.m. Friday.
