South Callaway boys beat Eugene for share of SMC title

The Bulldogs claimed a share of the Show-Me Conference title with a 76-71 overtime win over the Eagles to close the regular season on Saturday.

South Callaway (21-2, 7-1 SMC) outscored Eugene 13-8 in the extra session to claim its first conference championship since 2002.

After trailing 36-31 at intermission, the Bulldogs used a 23-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter to move in front 54-49 to start the fourth.

South Callaway's offense stalled in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 14-9 to end regulation tied 63-all. The Bulldogs went 5-for-7 from the free-throw line in overtime to secure the win.

South Callaway senior guard Troy Hentges led all players with 24 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Cory Hanger scored 22 points and handed out six assists, while senior guard Terry Miles finished with 20 points.

The Bulldogs finished their junior varsity campaign with a 61-53 triumph. Sophomore guard Blake Parker tallied a game-high 22 points and sophomore guard Brandon Ashley had 14.

Freshman guard Kaden Helsel totaled 11 points for the Bulldogs (17-6).

South Callaway is the host and No. 2 seed in the Class 3, District 8 tournament in Mokane. The Bulldogs take on the No. 7 Hallsville Indians in a first-round matchup at 8:30 tonight.

South Callaway topped the Indians 63-52 on Feb. 13 in Hallsville.

The Lady Owls erased a 17-point second-half deficit to outlast the Lady Pirates in American Midwest Conference play in Saturday's home finale at Anderson Arena.

William Woods (20-7, 16-6 AMC) won for a fourth straight game.

Ahead 33-28 at halftime, Park used a half-opening 12-0 spurt to build its 17-point cushion. Lady Owls sophomore forward Kelsey Scherder's free throws with 2 minutes, 10 seconds left completed a 16-5 run to give William Woods a 57-56 edge.

The Lady Owls prevailed despite its meager 29 percent (17-of-58) showing from the field. William Woods junior forward Nia Lateju tied the game-high with 17 points. Senior guard Blake French scored 13 points, eclipsing 1,000 for her career.

Senior guard Destani Stensrud also tallied 13 points, while Scherder finished with 11 points .

The Lady Owls play an AMC game at Columbia College at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Lady Blue Jays went scoreless in the final 2 minutes, 40 seconds of their SLIAC overtime loss to the Lady Golden Eagles in Saturday's regular-season finale.

Westminster (17-7, 14-4 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) trailed 40-33 at halftime, but led by five points with 2:20 left in regulation.

Junior guard Mackenzie Haddox connected on two free throws with 3:14 left in the extra session, the final Lady Blue Jay points of the game. Westminster was outscored 13-4 in overtime.

Junior guard Kasey Gatson and sophomore forward Andrea Zalis each paced the Lady Blue Jays with 20 points, Haddox finished with 19 points.

Westminster - the No. 2 seed in the SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament - will play No. 3 Eureka at 5 p.m. Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky.

Junior forward DJ Johnson's double-double lifted the Owls to an American Midwest Conference overtime win over the Pirates on Saturday in their home finale.

Johnson racked up 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for William Woods (11-17, 8-12 AMC). The Owls outscored Park 11-5 in the extra session to avenge a 66-65 loss to the Pirates on January 10 in Parkville.

Senior forward Nate Bitner led William Woods with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Senior forward Derrick Hayes provided 16 points, while sophomore guard Alec Mulvihill scored 15.

The Owls travel to No. 2-ranked Columbia College for an AMC clash at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Blue Jays' five-point halftime lead couldn't hold up in their season-ending SLIAC loss to the Golden Eagles on Saturday.

Westminster ends the season 5-20 overall and 4-14 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Senior guard Brandon Moore closed out his Blue Jay career with a team-high 14 points. Sophomore forward Tanner Gentges finished with 10 points.

CHICKSASHA, Okla. - The No. 19 Lady Owls managed just six hits in their five-inning loss to the Lady Falcons in the backhalf of a doubleheader on Saturday.

William Woods (2-4) began the day with a 9-2 triumph over the MidAmerica Nazarene Lady Pioneers.

The Lady Owls play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic with games against Ave Maria University and Belhaaven (Mississippi) University on Friday in Columbus, Georgia. The contests are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
