Westminster men come up short against Iowa Wesleyan

The host Blue Jays erased a 10-point halftime deficit, but couldn't finish the rally in Monday night's 63-55 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to the Tigers on Henry Iba Court.

Westminster College (5-17, 4-11 SLIAC) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and was down 35-25 at halftime. The Blue Jays started the second half on a 12-4 run to get to within two points, before Iowa Wesleyan stretched its lead back out.

Westminster senior guard Verdis Lee Jr. - a Fulton graduate - hit the second of two free throws to tie the game at 52-all with 4 minutes, 44 seconds left.

From there, the Tigers closed the game on a 9-3 run to complete the season sweep of the Blue Jays.

Lee tallied 13 points and a game-high five assists to pace Westminster, which shot 39 percent (19-of-49) as a team. Senior guard Brandon Moore scored 10 points, while junior forward Matt Murphy had nine points and tied the game-high with six rebounds.

Chris Fowler tallied a game-high 20 points for Iowa Wesleyan (11-9, 7-7), which shot 51 percent (24-of-47) from the field. Marquis Jones came off the bench to contribute 11 points, while Will Stephenson collected six rebounds to give the Tigers a narrow 30-27 advantage on the boards.

The Blue Jays host SLIAC foe Fontbonne University in their home finale at 8 tonight. Westminster fell to the Griffins 67-60 on Jan. 21 in St. Louis.
