Westminster men edge past Eureka

The Blue Jays fended off the Red Devils second-half surge to secure a 54-50 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Saturday.

Westminster (5-17, 4-11 SLIAC) led 32-18 at halftime and stretched that margin to as many as 15 points in the early moments of the second half.

Eureka (10-11, 8-7 SLIAC) took a 50-49 lead on Sam James' layup with 57 seconds remaining to force a Blue Jay timeout. Blue Jays sophomore forward Tanner Gentges was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws with :26 to push Westminster back in front.

He hit two more free throws with :12 left, while senior guard Verdis Lee Jr. - a Fulton High graduate - hit 1-of-2 from the line with :01 left to conclude the scoring.

The Blue Jays shot 42 percent from the field (16-of-38), while connecting on 18-of-26 free throws. Junior forward Matt Murphy led Westminster with 10 points and six rebounds.

Junior guard Brandon Drum and freshman guard Tanner Cochran each logged nine points, while Gentges finished with seven.

James scored a game-high 15 points to pace the Red Devils. Guard Seth Wickert added 10 points as Eureka shot just 30 percent (17-of-57) from the field.

Red Devil guard Greg Kent grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, allowing his team to earn a 38-31 rebounding edge.

The Blue Jays returned home for a SLIAC tilt with Iowa Wesleyan on Monday night. Results were not available at press time.
