No. 25 Owls claim series win over Christian Brothers

William Woods suffered its first loss of the season, dropping the backhalf of a doubleheader to the NCAA Division II Christian Brothers University Bucs 3-1 on Sunday.

The Owls grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior starter Kyle Marburger allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and the Bucs finished their scoring with a run off senior reliever Ryan Yuengel in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Jordan Dey finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI as William Woods collected eight hits. Marburger struck out three, but lasted just 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. He allowed the two earned runs on four hits and gave up a pair of walks.

The Owls clinched a series win with a 9-0 triumph in Sunday's opening game. Senior shortstop Stephen Kohler went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Senior center fielder Cody Stewart was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while senior second baseman Javier Ledesma was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI to power William Woods 12-hit attack.

Junior starter Jacob Guilianelli struck out four in 3 1/3 innings to register the win. Guilianelli scattered four hits and surrendered a pair of walks.

The Owls kicked the series off with a 7-2 win on Saturday. Dey finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior left fielder Larry Price was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Senior third baseman Austin Clapp finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Stewart was 1-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a steal as William Woods collected nine hits.

Senior starter Adam Brush struck out six in 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Brush yielded an earned run on four hits and walked five.

The Owls take on Benedictine (Kansas) College to open play at the Joplin Tournament at 6 p.m. Friday. William Woods continues tournament play with a doubleheader against Midland University beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.
