South Callaway boys set school record, dominate MMA

The Bulldogs bounced back from a title-game loss to Salisbury by possibly setting a school record for their prolific point total in Monday night's 104-46 manhandling of the Colonels.

Featuring five players in double figures, South Callaway (17-2) bolted to a 32-14 advantage after one quarter and rolled into halftime with a commanding 61-27 lead. The Bulldogs extended the margin to 87-37 after outscoring Missouri Military Academy 26-10 in the third quarter.

Senior guard Troy Hentges connected for a game-high 25 points to guide South Callaway, while senior guard Cory Hanger tallied 16 and sophomore guard Blake Parker contributed 15. Senior forward Luke Horstman added 13 points and senior guard Terry Miles chipped in with 10.

Horstman also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and senior forward Harold Woods collected seven. Senior guard Dax Helsel paced the Bulldogs with seven assists and Hanger had six.

"This was a good game for our guys to build some confidence after last Saturday at Sturgeon (Tournament)," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "We came out with great energy and really shared the ball well offensively.

"We got several guys involved and moved the ball well. We were able to work on some things defensively that we plan on using down the stretch of February."

Isaiah Adkins led MMA with 15 points and Ari Sandui was next with 11.

In Saturday night's championship at Sturgeon, the No. 2 seed Bulldogs were outscored by undefeated, top-seeded Salisbury - ranked No. 3 in Class 2 - 21-5 in the third quarter as the Panthers pulled away for a 67-48 victory.

South Callaway trailed 17-10 after one quarter, but outscored Salisbury 19-14 in the second quarter to close within 31-29 at the break. The Panthers, though, used their decisive third-quarter outburst to open up a 52-34 advantage.

"Salisbury is, by far, the best team we've played this year," Brandt said. "Their zone (defense) and size really gave us problems in the third quarter. They forced us into several turnovers that resulted in points in transition."

Hentges, logging 15 points, was the only player to reach double figures for the Bulldogs. Miles followed with nine points, senior forward Jacob Smith scored eight points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds, and Hanger passed out eight assists.

Lane Springer topped Salisbury with a game-high 20 points, while Brady Francis supplied 16 and Keegan Wyatt finished with 11.

South Callaway hosted Russellville in a Show-Me Conference matchup Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time.
