Fulton girls upset in Southern Boone opener

The second-seeded Lady Hornets' run at the Southern Boone Classic got off to a rocky start with a 50-41 upset loss to the No. 7 Lady Eagles in first-round play Monday night.

The game was tied at 11-all tie after the first quarter, but Southern Boone opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to grab the advantage. Outscored 12-6 in the period, the Lady Hornets trailed 23-17 at halftime.

Fulton's deficit expanded to as many as 13 points and was trimmed to as few as four points in the second half. The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Hornets 27-26 during that span.

Junior forward NaShayla Brandt logged team highs of 11 points and eight rebounds for Fulton (10-7), which had its two-game winning streak halted. Junior guard Sloane Totta added nine points and senior forward Laurel Royer scored eight as the Lady Hornets shot just 37 percent (16-of-43) from the field.

Southern Boone's Kylie Shoot netted a game-high 20 points, including all four of the Lady Eagles' 3-pointers. Skyler Beeson added 11 points and 12 rebounds as Southern Boone shot 39 percent (19-of-49) as a team.

The Lady Eagles dominated the boards, easily outrebounding Fulton 42-19.

The Lady Hornets will play No. 3 seed Harrisburg in the consolation semifinals at 4:30 p.m. today. The Lady Bulldogs were knocked off by No. 6 seed Blair Oaks 70-59 in a first-round matchup Monday night.
