Hornets tie for seventh at Odessa Invitational

Juniors Zach Benner and Josh McClure each garnered first-place showings and maintained their spotless season records as Fulton tied for seventh place at the Odessa Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

The Hornets - ranked No. 2 in Class 2 by rankwrestlers.com - and Marceline both finished with 55 points. Odessa (125) secured the team title, while Smithville (113), Mexico (72), Chillicothe (69) and Monett (67) rounded out the top five.

McClure (31-0) - the defending state champion at 113 pounds - defeated Mexico's Jordan Jones (33-8) by a 12-4 major decision to cap off a perfect 5-0 day at 138 pounds.

Benner (31-0) - last year's state runner-up at 182 pounds - also went 5-0 on the day, besting Smithville's Jacob Boyd (41-7) in a 3-0 decision at 195 pounds.

Freshman Tucker Caswell and sophomore Brandon Dews each clinched second-place showings in their respective weight classes.

Caswell (31-3) was the runner-up at 106 pounds after defeating Odessa's Logan Windsor (33-11) by a 6-0 decision in his final round-robin match. Caswell went 4-1 on the day, his only loss being a 4-2 decision to Monett's Joel Barrientos (40-8).

Dews (28-4) placed second at 120 pounds, suffering a fall 39 seconds into his championship match against Odessa's Dakota Miller (44-2) to finish the day 3-1.

Senior Taylor Gillooly, junior Andy Baysinger and freshman Colton Bristol all earned third-place accolades for Fulton.

Gillooly (8-2) opened up competition at 182 pounds by besting Monett's Bryce Logan (23-19) in a 5-1 decision. Gillooly - returning to the mat after rehabbing from knee surgery - medically forfeited to Reeds Spring's Tate Johnson and Smithville's Luke Sachs to go 1-2 on the day.

Baysinger (20-5) - who suffered an ankle injury at the Jim Wallace Classic last Saturday - medically forfeited his final 160-pound round-robin pairing with Odessa's Austin Weygandt (38-8) to close the day at 2-2.

Baysinger opened the day with a 6-1 decision over Chillicothe's Zachary Daley (15-14). He suffered a fall to Reeds Spring's William White (28-3) :00 into his second match, but bounced back to topple Monett's Ian Meyer (34-12) in a 5-4 decision.

Bristol - seeing his first action of the year at 170 pounds - suffered a fall 2:20 in his final round-robin match against Odessa's Mason Smith (19-14). Bristol - who went 3-2 on the day - was pinned 3:50 into his first match against Mexico's Ethan Musgrove (17-18), but vanquished Chillicothe's Paul Vaught (0-5) via a 7-2 decision in his next clash.

Bristol registered a 3-2 decision over Smithville's Garrett Steffen (9-4), then pinned Centralia's Andrew Arp (12-17) 1:55 into their pairing.

Freshman Jacob Kern (7-9) finished 1-2 in round-robin competition to place fourth at 126 pounds. Kern dropped a 16-6 major decision to Odessa's Garrett Peek in his final match. He opened his day with a 12-2 major-decision loss to Chillicothe's Bryce Larson (25-15), then bounced back with a 7-1 decision over Logan-Rogersville's Jamieson Reaves (23-15).

Sophomore Luke Berrey (24-9) had to medically forfeit his final two matches at 152 pounds to Chillicothe's Matt Shaffer and Marceline's Brady Stallo, respectively, to take fifth place.

Berrey pinned Centralia's Jackson Evans (17-14) 4:34 into the opening match. Berrey dropped a 7-2 decision to Odessa's Jake Barstow (26-8), then dropped an 18-3 technical fall to Mexico's Brit Wilson (32-2).

The Hornets - 21-0 overall, 5-0 North Central Missouri Conference - host conference foe Marshall at 6 tonight.
