Lady Bulldogs edge Eugene to earn first SMC victory

EUGENE - Four players reached double figures as the South Callaway Lady Bulldogs notched their first Show-Me Conference win by outlasting the Eugene Lady Eagles 63-60 last Thursday night.

South Callaway (4-2, 1-1 SMC) trailed 26-25 at the break, but outscored Eugene 14-9 in the third quarter to go on top 39-35. The Lady Bulldogs were able to hold off the Lady Eagles despite being outscored 25-24 in the fourth quarter.

"Our girls played very well ... both offensively and defensively," South Callaway head coach Darren Humphrey said. "Eugene is a difficult gym in which to play - the crowd, the atmosphere and the competition.

"We were able to weather the storm and come out with a victory."

Junior center Konnor Arrowood produced a game-high 21 points to guide the Lady Bulldogs, while junior forward Nicole Horstman registered 17. Sophomore guard Ashley Potter was next with 12 points and sophomore forward Adrian Mann added 11.

"All the girls are playing well and that makes my job a little easier," Humphrey said. "We - as of recently - have struggled a little from the free-throw line, but we have been able to counteract that in other areas.

"I can't help but be proud of these young ladies and their dedication."

Lexi Dickerson finished with a team-high 19 points for Eugene and Katelyn Engelbrecht provided 16.

South Callaway squares off against California at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, in the MRMC Holiday Shootout at Moberly Area Community College.
