Ladybirds exit Centralia Tournament after consolation semifinal loss

CENTRALIA - The No. 4 seed North Callaway Ladybirds remained winless after shooting a dreadful 26 percent in Wednesday night's 39-28 loss to the No. 8 Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs in the consolation semifinals of the 60th-annual Centralia Invitational Tournament.

North Callaway (0-5) was only down 24-22 to open the fourth quarter, but Sturgeon took control by outscoring the Ladybirds 15-6 over the last 8 minutes.

Senior center Bethany Bloss scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds to top the Ladybirds, who connected on only 12-of-47 shots from the field. Sophomore guard Kyla Bertschinger contributed five points.

"The girls have to learn how to play four quarters and they have to learn to be a lot more aggressive," North Callaway head coach Matt Miller said. "We just couldn't make shots again tonight."

Mariah Williams countered with a game-high 11 points for Sturgeon (4-3), which was 18-of-31 from the free-throw line.

The Ladybirds open Eastern Missouri Conference play at Van-Far at 6 p.m. Monday.
