Lady Bulldogs profit from errors, rally to pick up first win

MOKANE - The South Callaway Lady Bulldogs softball team capitalized on two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning, rallying for two runs to clip Van-Far 6-5 on Wednesday night.

South Callaway - playing its home opener - squared its season record at 1-1. The Lady Bulldogs appeared to be in control with a 4-0 lead, before Van-Far put together a comeback of its own with a five-run outburst in the top of the sixth to take a one-run advantage.

Junior shortstop Nicole Horstman led off South Callaway's half of the seventh with a single and moved up on junior relief pitcher Konnor Arrowood's single. After both runners advanced to second and third on a throwing error on the play, senior third baseman Ashley Miller followed with a single off the pitcher's glove.

Horstman scored on the hit to tie the game at 5-all. When Miller tried to advance to second, a wild throw by Van-Far's pitcher into the outfield allowed Arrowood to race home with the winning run.

Senior first baseman Kennedy Farley went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and a run scored as the Lady Bulldogs accumulated 10 hits. Senior left fielder Cheyenne Witt was also 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Arrowood - working the final 1 1/3 innings in relief of Miller - earned the victory. She gave up an unearned run on one hit, struck out three and issued a walk.

South Callaway (0-2) dropped the junior varsity game 12-1.

The Lady Bulldogs open pool play in the Battle Tournament in Columbia against Springfield Hillcrest at 10 a.m. Friday. Liberty North and Mexico are also in South Callaway's pool. The tournament continues Saturday.
