Lady Hornets tumble to Tolton in five innings

The Lady Hornets managed just five hits in bowing to the Trailblazers 13-3 in five innings to open the season on Monday at the high school athletic complex.

After Tolton opened with a pair of runs in the top half of the first, sophomore second baseman Emma Abbott led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. Sophomore starter Katerina Roesner drove her in on a fielder's choice groundout to the pitcher.

The Trailblazers stretched their advantage to 5-1 with three in the second inning, but the Lady Hornets brought the margin back to within two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Junior catcher Hannah Sparks doubled in freshman third baseman Mackenzie Johnson and was replaced at second by freshman courtesy runner Mattie Arnold. Arnold scored Fulton's final run on a single by sophomore left fielder Stephanie Gilbert.

Tolton upped the lead to three with a run in the third, then exploded for seven runs in the fifth to close out the game.

Roesner lasted just two innings, allowed five runs - two earned - on four hits, walked five and struck out three. Freshman Hayden Trowbridge threw the final three innings for the Lady Hornets, who committed four errors.

"We just couldn't throw enough strikes," Fulton head coach Laura Dooley-Wilder said. "My defense needs to be able to back up pitchers when they aren't throwing well."

Abbott was 2-for-3, while Johnson, Sparks and Gilbert were all 1-for-2.

The Lady Hornets travel to Eldon for a game at 5 today.
