Wildcats stay on surge, down Harrisburg

NEW BLOOMFIELD - The New Bloomfield Wildcats tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference in Tuesday night's 7-3 non-conference triumph over the Harrisburg Bulldogs.

New Bloomfield broke on top with a run in the first, but Harrisburg tied the game with a run in the third. The Wildcats answered with two runs in their half of the third and opened up a 7-1 advantage behind their outburst in the sixth.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh to account for the final margin.

New Bloomfield is 7-1 in its last eight games, squaring its season record at 7-7.

"The players have bought in to what we're trying to do here, and it's showing now," Wildcats head coach Justin Forsythe said. "It took a while for them to figure it out, but they're really rolling right now."

Junior shortstop Grant Nichols went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs batted in and scored twice to help spark New Bloomfield's 13-hit attack. Senior catcher Derek Shikles also finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while senior third baseman Brady Wiler was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Junior second baseman Clay Jensen went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and junior starter Tyler Fennewald finished 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior second baseman Sam Niedergerke was 1-for-2, scored twice and had two stolen bases.

"They're sticking to their approach at the plate and taking what they get," Forsythe said. "When they do, they're finding the gaps."

Fennewald gave up just an earned run on six hits in six innings to log the victory. He struck out seven and walked three.

The Wildcats travel to Mexico to face Missouri Military Academy at 5 p.m. today.
