Westminster finishes third in SLIAC postseason tourney

The No. 3 seed Blue Jays used three singles victories to turn back No. 4 Webster University 5-2 for third place at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.

Freshmen Adam Fuchs (6-3, 6-1) and Peter Hasenmueller (6-1, 6-0) posted respective straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for Westminster College. Junior Kyle Collins (5-7, 6-3 and 6-1) triumphed in three sets at No. 4.

Hasenmueller and senior Nate Connell triumphed 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Collins and sophomore Scott Strough - a Fulton graduate - won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Westminster (5-9) advanced to the third-place match with a 5-0 triumph over No. 5 seed Fontbonne University. The Blue Jays went a perfect 3-for-3 in doubles play, while Collins and sophomore Grant Peterson rolled to straight-set wins in singles action.

The Blue Jays bowed to No. 2 seed Greenville (Illinois) College 5-2 to open tournament play Friday. Collins grabbed a three-set win (2-6, 6-4 and 6-3) at No. 4 singles, while Connell and Hasenmueller held on for a 9-8 victory at No. 1 doubles.
