Westminster moves throw SLIAC foe Iowa Wesleyan

The Blue Jays extended their season-high winning streak to eight games and picked up a series sweep with its 13-9 SLIAC triumph over the Tigers on Sunday.

A trio of Westminster players had three-hit outings as the Blue Jays (17-8, 12-4 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) exploded for 16 hits.

Iowa Wesleyan (12-18, 6-13 SLIAC) trimmed its deficit to 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Westminster countered with three runs in the eighth.

Freshman center fielder Nick Bohlman and junior catcher A.C. Long each supplied RBI doubles, while sophomore designated hitter Connor Hager singled in a run to help the Blue Jays up their advantage to 11-7 .

The Tigers cut the lead in half with two in the bottom of the inning, but the Westminster topped off its scoring with two more runs in the ninth.

Hager was 3-for-6 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored, while freshman shortstop Chris Asher drove in an RBI and also finished 3-for-6.

Long was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, senior first baseman Tim Chambliss went 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman Adam Mundle went 2-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Sophomore reliever Miller Bowles pitched 1 2/3 innings in picking up his first win of the year. Bowles (1-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits.

Junior Collin Brinker (North Callaway) got his second save of the year, fanning three and allowed two runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Iowa Wesleyan posted 15 hits.

The Blue Jays had another 16-hit onslaught as they throttled the Tigers in eight innings in the backhalf of Saturday's doubleheader. Long finished 4-for-5 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored as four other Westminster players logged multi-hit games.

Asher was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore right fielder Tanner Branneky was 2-for-4 with three driven in, two runs scored, a homer and a double.

Junior third baseman Tyler Branneky finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a triple and junior left fielder Deion Hughes was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Blue Jays junior starter Will Miller struck out nine in seven innings to stay unbeaten. Miller (4-0) allowed one run on six hits and walked one in seven innings.

Hughes tossed a four-hit shutout in directing Westminster to a triumph in the series opener. Hughes fanned six in seven innings to up his season record to 6-1.

Long went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, a double and two runs scored, while Tyler Branneky was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored to power the Blue Jays' 18-hit rampage.

Bohlmann produced four RBIs and scored two runs to highlight his 2-for-4 outing. Hughes was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, three runs scored and a triple, while senior Cam Backes went 2-for-5 with two driven in.

Tyler Branneky was named SLIAC Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time overall on Monday. The St. Louis native had multiple hits in three of the Blue Jays' five games last week, finishing with a .556 batting average, three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Westminster returns home for a SLIAC doubleheader against MacMurray (Illinois) College this Sunday. Games start at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
