William Woods, Freed-Hardeman split AMC twinbill

Sophomore designated player Beth Begemann's 3-for-3 effort helped the Owls clip the Lady Lions 5-3 and salvage an AMC doubleheader split Friday.

William Woods University (21-22, 10-8 American Midwest Conference) tallied three runs in the top of the first inning to open the second game. Redshirt sophomore right fielder Brailee Schulte doubled home Begemann and junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton for the first two runs, then scored on senior third baseman Caroline Sicht's RBI single later in the inning.

Begemann singled in Hatton in the fifth, while Sicht's sacrifice fly plated the Lady Owls' final run.

Freed-Hardeman University (23-14, 15-7 AMC) scored once in the first, then notched single runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively.

Hatton was 2-for-4, while senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Sicht went 1-for-2, while Schulte and sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell both finished 1-for-4 to round out William Woods' 10-9 hitting advantage.

Freshman starter Allison Waskow struck out one in a complete-game win. Waskow gave up two earned runs on nine hits and didn't allow a walk.

The Lions used eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to collect a 10-2, five-inning rout of the Lady Owls in the opener. William Woods senior catcher Macy Wierschem's two-run double to right tied the game at 2-all in the second.

Wierschem, Sicht and Schulte all went 1-for-2 as the Lady Owls were limited to five hits. Campbell and Hatton were both 1-for-3.

Freshman starter Bre Logan went the distance for the Lady Owls in suffering the loss. Logan was tagged for 10 runs - eight earned - on 11 hits, struck out four and walked three.

William Woods concludes its home schedule with an AMC doubleheader against Stephens College today. Games begin at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
