Hornets finish third at Marshall Invitational

Fulton split its four dual matches in taking third place at the Marshall Invitational on Friday.

The Hornets turned back Trenton 6-3 and edged (Sedalia) Smith-Cotton 5-4 in tournament play, while bowing to North Central Missouri Conference foes Marshall 9-0 and Kirksville 8-1. Marshall secured the team championship, followed by Kirksville, Fulton, Smith-Cotton and Trenton.

"I was really proud of the kids," Hornets head coach Rob Fisher said. "Everybody played hard and gave full, maximum effort on every point. ... I was pretty satisfied."

Freshman Haydon Windsor compiled a 3-1 tournament record at No. 1 singles to guide Fulton, while sophomores Grant Hendricks and Justin Adams were both 2-2 at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Sophomore Robert Van Vickle and junior Alex Zajdel also paired up to go 2-2 at No. 3 doubles.

The Hornets - now 4-7 on the season - were coming off a 7-2 home victory over Columbia Independent on Thursday night. Here are singles and doubles results:

•No. 1 singles: Windsor (F) defeated Josh Corez (CI), 10-1; No. 2: Hendricks (F) def. Michael Muzinich (CI), 10-2; No. 3: Josiah Kee (CI) def. freshman Josh Haarmann (F), 10-3; No. 4: Chris Melnyz (CI) def. freshman Isaiah Mackley (F), 10-2; No. 5: freshman Miles Johnson (F) def. Devon Cope (CI), 10-2; No. 6: freshman Devin Ferro (F) def. Mary Clevenger (CI), 10-4.

•No. 1 doubles: Windsor/Hendricks (F) def. Corez/Muzinich (CI), 10-2; No. 2: Adams/sophomore Dustin Lee (F) def. Kee/Melnyz (CI), 11-10 (10-8); No. 3: Johnson/Ferro (F) def. Cope/Clevenger (CI), 10-1.

Fulton returns to NCMC play when it hosts Marshall at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
