Kemper's grand slam sparks Owls to AMC split with Park

The William Woods University Owls' potent offense helped salvage a split in their latest American Midwest Conference doubleheader.

The Owls negated five errors by pounding out 12 hits to vanquish the Park University Pirates 13-8 in the second game of Tuesday's twinbill.

William Woods (24-8, 11-5 AMC) trailed 1-0 through three innings, but gained control behind a five-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Austin Clapp's RBI single tied the game, but it was a grand slam by sophomore designated hitter Konrad Kemper - a South Callaway graduate - that pushed William Woods in front for good at 5-1.

The Owls added another run in the sixth, but Park (8-18, 5-10 AMC) logged two in its half of the inning to get within 6-3.

The Pirates trimmed their deficit to two by tallying a run in the seventh, but William Woods exploded for seven runs in the eighth to make it 13-4. Park added on four runs in the ninth.

Kemper was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored to spark the Owls at the plate, while senior first baseman Dustin Kremer went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Clapp finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and scored three times, and senior center fielder Cody Stewart was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Senior Ryan Yuengel threw 2 1/3 perfect innings of relief to pick up the win. Senior James Ball worked the last 3 2/3 innings to pick up the save.

Kemper's solo shot in the seventh inning was the Owls' only tally in their 4-1 loss in Tuesday's opener. The Pirates logged all four of their runs in the third.

Junior left fielder Larry Price was 2-for-3 and senior second baseman Javier Ledesma finished 1-for-2 as William Woods managed just five hits. Kemper and senior right fielder Nick Spagnola were both 1-for-3.

Junior starter Kyle Marburger allowed four earned runs on four hits in four innings to take the loss for the Owls. Marburger struck out four and walked two.

William Woods returns home to begin a three-game AMC series against Hannibal-LaGrange University at 3 p.m. Friday. The two teams will then play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
