Lady Owls take seventh at Ashford Invitational

William Woods closed out the Ashford Invitational with a straight-set win over the Central Methodist Lady Eagles 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21 on Saturday.

William Woods (8-8) finished the event with a record of 2-2.

Freshman setter Brittney Engelbrecht earned her 13th double-double of the season as she handed out 42 assists and tied senior defensive specialist Abbie O'Mara for the team lead with 17 digs. Freshman outside hitter Abbi McKnelly led with 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Emily Becker totaled 15.

The Lady Owls dropped their first match of the day to Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) University 25-20, 15-25, 25-23 and 25-21. Engelbrecht had a double-double of 46 assists and 15 digs.

Senior outside hitter Kristen Bauer notched a team-high 14 kills to take over the program's all-time lead in that category at 1,177. O'Mara led with 44 digs, Becker added 18 and junior defensive specialist McKenna Hisel and freshman outside hitter Abby Ferguson added 16 and 14, respectively.

William Woods took fifth-ranked Northwestern College to the limit, eventually falling in five sets 25-18, 28-30, 27-29, 25-13 and 15-9 on Friday in pool play.

Becker posted a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs, McKnelly led the Lady Owls with 18 kills and Bauer pitched in 11. Engelbrecht posted 54 assists and 20 digs, while O'Mara had a team-best 39 digs and junior middle blocker Cierra Merz accumulated 13.

McKnelly had a double-double of 15 kills and 19 digs in William Woods' 25-21, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-22 win over St. Ambrose (Iowa) University to begin the tournament.

O'Mara led the team in digs with 24, Hisel matched McKnelly's 19 and Engelbrecht totaled 18 to go along with 42 assists. Becker posted 13 kills.

The Lady Owls host Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College to begin American Midwest Conference play at 7 p.m. this Friday.
