Annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night event returns Saturday

Money to benefit 2015 Callaway County Relay, "Super' Sam Playground Project

Boyd & Boyd and Friends' Relay for Life Team will host the fourth annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night Saturday night. The event will be from 4-6:30 p.m. at KC Country.

Sara Borcherding came up with the idea to have the annual event. When Borcherding was a little girl, she attended a similar event with her father. Today, she has fond memories from that event. She wanted to give her husband and daughter, as well as other dads and their daughters, those same fond memories.

"It was something that was special that I still remember going to," Borcherding said. "I thought it would be a special memory for my daughter and husband and a great opportunity for the other dads and daughters in the area."

The event, she said, usually sees infant daughters all the way up to teenage daughters and fathers, step-fathers, brothers, uncles and grandpas. Borcherding said her husband and daughter have gone each year.

As usual, the event will be stocked with lots of sweets and two chocolate fountains - one for milk chocolate and one for white chocolate. During the event, there will be a visit from Santa, photo booth, games, door prizes and dancing. Those who attend will receive a corsage and photo as a keepsake.

Admission is $25 per couple - if a father brings more than one child, each additional child's admission will be $5. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Boyd & Boyd or at Coldwell Banker. Tickets can also be purchased at the door Saturday night.

Julie Boyd Uhls said this year's proceeds will benefit the 2015 Callaway County Relay For Life and the Super Sam Playground Project. For the playground project, Boyd Uhls said they will purchase playground equipment to be placed in a Fulton city park. Depending on what equipment is chosen, she said the project could cost anywhere between $8,000 and $10,000.

Borcherding said the new playground equipment will be installed in memory of "Super' Sam Santhuff, a 6-year-old Fulton boy who passed away from cancer in September, and to raise cancer awareness.

"Sam (Santhuff) and his family had such an impact on the community," Borcherding said. "We've never seen a family have such an impact on the community as far as raising cancer awareness and really involving the community with their journey. We wanted to do something special to not only honor Sam's memory but to further their goals of making the community more aware of childhood cancer and the uphill battle that the families face."

The Santhuff family will have the final say on what type of playground equipment is chosen. Boyd Uhls and Borcherding both said the city of Fulton has done a good job of working with them on picking possible park locations for the new equipment. The final location for the new playground equipment will depend on what type of equipment is chosen. A plaque or other signage will be placed with the new equipment to remind those who use it why it is there.

Boyd Uhls said the Daddy Daughter Date Night event usually raises about $2,000. They will continue to fundraise for the playground project through the relay season.
