T-Birds' Menard places 21st at Class 2 golf championships

North Callaway senior Justin Menard finished in a four-way tie for 21st place at the Class 2 boys' golf championships at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.

Menard shot a 20-over-par-164 (85-79) to match the two-day totals of Barstow's Thomas Dunn and Whitfield's Chase Kinder and Colin Strege.

"I thought he had some really awesome holes; he eagled two par fives in two days," Thunderbirds head coach Jason Smith said. "Over his last six holes played, he played 1-under-par. He was in a position where it could go one way or the other.

"He felt like he wasn't going to get all-state status, but he kept pushing and kept working at it."

Kory Franks of Blair Oaks claimed the individual title with a 3-over-par-147 (69-78). Barstow logged a 659 (327-332) to secure the team championship.

Menard - who signed to play golf at William Woods - finished the first day in 35th place. Smith complimented Menard on mentally regrouping rather than folding.

"He made tremendous improvements in his game, not just in the physical game, but the mental game," Smith said. "He could have just said he was in 35th place after the first day, but he was determined to move up as far as he could."
